  • Doubtful Sound

    Ancient Green

Doubtful Sound, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, 2025

Visiting Doubtful Sound is like going back in time to an ancient world untouched by humanity. Its clean, quiet serenity soothes the soul.

This image captures a section of pristine temperate rainforest with lush greens and the dark reflective fresh water of the sound. If you haven’t been there, I hope this image inspires you to visit one day soon.

Also see Ancient Green’s partner image, Tree Fern.

  • Tree Fern

Doubtful Sound, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, 2025

This image was taken not far from its partner image, Ancient Green.

As we floated quietly by, the sun landed on the soft tree ferns, highlighting them against the surrounding rainforest.

Like Ancient Green, I hope this image gives a sense of the untouched beauty of this part of New Zealand, and the peace and tranquility I felt there.

  • Herons

Helensville, Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand, 2021

When I saw this pair of white-faced herons nesting in an ancient pohutukawa tree, I was drawn by their elegant beauty framed against the moss and lichen on the branches.

These birds build a nest together high in the trees and raise their young together.

  • Winter Trees

Clutha River, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2022

On a winter walk alongside the Clutha river, the bare bones of the trees were revealed, with shapes, structures and colours not seen at other times of year.

This small white sapling caught my eye, guarded by the older, larger trees.

  • Snow Front

Lindis Valley, Otago, New Zealand, 2025

A snow front rolling through the Lindis Valley softens the ridges and highlights the contours of the hills.

  • After the Snow

Lindis Pass, Otago, New Zealand, 2025

The Lindis Pass is the highest point in the South Island’s state highway network. In summer the Pass is hot and dry, and in winter it is often covered with ice and snow. The dusting of snow and gentle light on this August afternoon gave me the chance to capture an image which is a little different to the usual golden hills.

  • After the Snow Close up

Lindis Pass, Otago, New Zealand, 2025

This image is a vignette from within the image After the Snow. The colours on the peaks and movement of light across the hills are worth a closer look.

  • Sentinels

Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, 2025

The Beech forest in Fiordland National Park is cool, damp and silent - other than the gentle birdsong. Exploring here is like walking back into prehistoric times.

See the image Moss for another view into this amazing world.

  • Moss

Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, 2025

This area of forest floor is in the same forest as the image Sentinels. The moss-carpeted ground and tree trunks drip with small ferns and native mistletoes, creating a cool, quiet and comforting atmosphere.
