Herons

Helensville, Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand, 2021

When I saw this pair of white-faced herons nesting in an ancient pohutukawa tree, I was drawn by their elegant beauty framed by the moss and lichen on the branches. The high branches kept them and their young safe.

White-faced herons build a nest together high in the trees and share in the raising of their young, taking turns to incubate the eggs and feed the nestlings.

A customer who recently purchased this image commented on how much she enjoyed the depths of green, which is such a feature of the New Zealand forest.
